#ISRO Successfully Launches #EOS-05: India's #First Imaging Satellite For #Geosynchronous Orbit
The Indian Space Research Organisation (#ISRO) has achieved a major milestone with the successful launch of #EOS-05, India’s first dedicated imaging satellite designed to operate from a #geosynchronous orbit.
The GSLV-F17, ISRO’s 19th #GSLV mission, lifted off at 2:55 AM IST on September 4, 2026, from the Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, #Sriharikota. The 51.7-metre-tall, 420.5-tonne rocket precisely placed the approximately 2,367-kg EOS-05 into its intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.
EOS-05 is designed to eventually operate around 36,000 km above Earth, where its geosynchronous orbit will enable prolonged and near-continuous imaging of a particular region. This represents a significant step beyond conventional Earth-observation satellites operating from lower orbits.
The satellite is expected to strengthen India’s capabilities in real-time #Earth observation, with applications spanning agriculture, disaster management, water resources, urban planning, environmental monitoring, forestry and ocean-resource management. Its persistent observation capability also has important strategic implications.
For GSLV, EOS-05 is the heaviest payload ever carried by the vehicle, surpassing its previous payload record. After reaching the transfer orbit, EOS-05 will undergo further orbital manoeuvres using its onboard propulsion system to reach its operational orbit.
With EOS-05, ISRO has opened a new chapter in India’s Earth-observation capabilities giving the country an “eye in the sky” capable of persistent imaging from geosynchronous orbit.
